Domestic Cold Water System Improvements
The Ohio State University
The Ohio State University contracted Stone Environmental to prepare construction plans for an upgrade to its domestic cold water distribution system serving the east side of the Columbus campus. The project included the design and routing of a new 8-inch diameter cold water line that cuts through the Oval and into College Road, a major vehicle thoroughfare through the campus. As part of the water line replacement, ADA crosswalk improvements were designed at various locations along the waterline route on College Road. Utility quality levels C and D were utilized in developing the construction drawings for this project.

Key challenges of this project were working around an extensive array of underground utilities including utility tunnels, keeping intact existing landscaping including mature trees, and developing a construction plan that addressed maintenance of traffic for both vehicles and pedestrians for a campus of over 50,000 students.

This project was reviewed by many Ohio State University departments including Facilities Design and Construction, Landscape Architect, ADA Compliance, Transportation and Parking, Department of Public Safety, and others. These reviews were all completed in a timely fashion to allow for construction to occur during the universitys summer session when student traffic was light.
